Exercises that reduce stress
In life most people experience stresses like going to work, caring for children, keeping up with the bills or illness. Stress damages your health by weakening your immune system, increase risk of heart disease, raise cholesterol, keep your blood sugar high, cause weight and skin problems. Regular exercises not only strengthen your physical health, but help you handle stress better. Exercises help you relax tense muscles, sleep better, and helps you release chemicals that give you a sense of well-being e.g. endorphins, adrenaline, serotonin and dopamines. The activities that best treat stress are things you like and commit to doing them regularly. Repeating the same motion for a period of time has a relaxing effect similar to meditation. Exercises that provide this effect include swimming laps, walking, running and cycling. Certain people enjoy exercises that focus on breathing and fluid movement, such as yoga and Tai chi. while others prefer exercising in pairs, like playing tennis or dancing the tango. It’s advisable to explore ideas that can help you reduce stress through exercise. Think of exercise as a way of relaxation or rest. Just like kids need play time, and so do adults. We need to stretch our muscles, get our hearts pumping, breathe fresh air and take a break from our daily responsibilities through exercising. Separate yourself from work in order to get a stress-reducing benefit from exercise, choose an activity that separates you from the work you do all day long. Activities like chasing after children, using the stairs at work, running the vacuum cleaner and mowing the lawn are good ways to burn calories. Find activities that take your mind away from the daily grind. Try out activities you enjoyed as a child, chances are you’ll still enjoy and like them. Take dancing classes or even go skating incase you loved it as a kid. Look into group activities at the local community center, health club or similar organization. Make it a habit and keep it regular. If you have children, see if you can swap childcare with other parents to give yourself some time of your own. Also, many health clubs offer free childcare while you exercise.
